All Year 11 learners attend 3 x 45-minute English lessons per week, and all Year 10 learners attend 2 x 45-minute lessons. Where appropriate, contact time is increased through bespoke 1:1 tuition or attendance at recognised, Quality Assured Alternative Providers.

At The Bridge School, we aim to develop a genuine enjoyment of reading through engaging and accessible texts that reflect both learners’ own experiences and the wider world. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced and supported to build confidence, resilience and independence in learning.

A key focus of our KS4 curriculum is emotional literacy, enabling learners to explore relevant and thought-provoking themes such as relationships, identity, conflict and resilience through fiction and non-fiction texts. Learners are encouraged to express their own thoughts and feelings, helping them to better understand themselves and others.

We place strong emphasis on real-life contexts, ensuring that reading and writing skills are meaningful and transferable beyond the classroom. Learners develop the ability to communicate clearly for different purposes and audiences, preparing them for further education, employment and everyday life.

Through structured support and regular feedback, learners develop the ability to read critically, interpret writers’ ideas and craft their own responses with increasing accuracy and confidence.

Areas covered across KS4 include:

Identifying and using literary techniques: developing an understanding of key terminology (the ‘nuts and bolts’ of English!) to communicate ideas clearly and effectively

Analysing fiction: exploring setting, themes, characterisation and plot, as well as language and structure, and responding thoughtfully to fiction texts

Analysing non-fiction: understanding different text types, context, purpose and audience, alongside language and structure, and responding to real-world texts

Comparing texts: identifying similarities and differences in ideas, perspectives and methods

Evaluating texts: considering writers’ methods, effectiveness and impact on the reader

Writing fiction and non-fiction: producing writing for a range of real-life purposes, audiences and contexts

SPaG Focus (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar): developing technical accuracy and control in writing

Speaking and Listening: building confidence in verbal communication, discussion and expressing viewpoints appropriately

Our approach ensures that all learners, regardless of their individual starting points, are supported to achieve meaningful qualifications while developing the literacy skills needed for life beyond school.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,1_3,1_3″
